Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A deer that was struck by a vehicle in the Rochester area tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the adult female deer was killed on November 4 in Olmsted County and was brought in to be tested by DNR staff. A news release says the discovery is the farthest northwest that CWD has been found in the southeast disease management zone.

The agency also reported that a deer harvested by a hunter in Dakota County on November 7th also tested positive for the fatal brain disease. The news release says it marked the first time CWD has been found in a hunter-harvested wild deer in the new South Metro disease management zone.

“It’s concerning to see these two positive test results. We will continue gathering data to see how prevalent the disease is in these areas, and maintain our aggressive management response,” said Michelle Carstensen, DNR’s wildlife health program supervisor.

There have now been 95 wild deer in Minnesota that have tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
