Burnsville, MN - (KROC AM News) - History was made at this year’s Miss Minnesota USA and Teen USA pageant.

For the first time ever, a contestant wore a hijab during the two day event held over the weekend in Burnsville.

19-year-old Halima Aden was the first Somali to enter the pageant and also became the first fully-covered Muslim woman to compete.

The young woman from St Cloud advanced to the semifinals but was not selected as a finalist.

Still, Aden told reporters she’s glad to be a trailblazer, adding “I feel like I'm here to bust those misconceptions and stereotypes of Muslim women.”

Crowned 2017 Miss Minnesota USA was Meridith Gould of Minneapolis.Tori Trittin was named 2017 Miss Minnesota Teen USA.
