Owatonna, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed I-35 between Faribault and Medford.

Officials say there have been numerous crashes, some involving multiple vehicles, on both the north and southbound lanes of the freeway since heavy snow began falling this morning. Traffic was already at a complete standstill before the closing of the freeway was announced.

Travel conditions across most of southern Minnesota are difficult this afternoon because of the slushy snow associated with a major storm system that is expected to affect the region the next several days. Most roadways in the Rochester area are currently described as completely covered by snow and local emergency personnel have been busy since the late morning responding to traffic crashes and vehicle spinouts.
