SE MN Lock & Dam Work Will Disrupt Boating on Mississippi River
La Crescent, MN (KROC-AM News) - River traffic—both commercial and recreational—will be disrupted over the next 2 weeks due to work on a lock and dam along the Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $3.1 million contract to an Iowa construction firm to replace all four main lock chamber miter gates at Lock and Dam 7 in La Crescent. The project will require the lock to be closed to all commercial and recreational traffic while the work is taking place.
A news release from the agency says the work is scheduled for July 22, July 24, July 29, and July 31. On those days, the lock will not be operational between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
During the closure times, boaters and commercial vessel operators are asked not to tie up on the guide walls. When the lock reopens, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says passage will prioritize government vessels, followed by commercial traffic and then recreational boats.
The Corps of Engineers notes that the miter gates at Lock and Dam 7 date back to the 1930s, and the installation of new gates will increase "navigational longevity and operational readiness."
