Southern MN Man Who Shot His Father With a Shotgun Pleads Guilty
Eagle Lake, MN (KROC-AM News) - A southern Minnesota man who shot and critically wounded with a shotgun his father on New Year's Day has admitted to the crime.
30-year-old Andrew David Douglas was arrested on January 1 after he called 911 and reported that he had shot another man in the arm in self-defense and the victim was "bleeding out." Court documents say that Blue Earth County deputies responded to the property in Eagle Lake near Mankato and found Douglas exiting the mobile home he shared with his father with blood on his clothing.
The criminal complaint says the law officers then found his 59-year-old father holding his badly disfigured right arm inside the residence. When he was asked was responsible, the court document indicates that he stated more than once, "I can't believe he did this, "and blamed his son.
The charges against Douglas alleged the shooting occurred after the father confronted his son about some missing or stolen jewelry. A woman, who also lived in the mobile home, told investigators the two men had been involved in physical fights at least three or four times before the shooting occurred.
Court documents indicate the father was transported to a hospital to be treated for what was described as a life-threatening gunshot wound.
His son, on Monday, entered a guilty plea to a first-degree assault charge. He is scheduled to be sentenced on the afternoon of September 30. Douglas remains jailed on $250,000 conditional bail.
