Surge of Bitter Cold, Dangerous Wind Chills to Return to Minnesota
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A surge of bitter cold air and dangerous wind chills are set to return to southeast Minnesota by the end of the work week.
The Rochester area was under a Wind Chill Advisory earlier this week that started this past Sunday and lasted until Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service issued a new advisory early Thursday morning.
The new Wind Chill Advisory takes effect at midnight tonight in Rochester and is set to expire at noon on Friday. Wind chills during the advisory are set to plummet as low as 25 below zero.
Although the Wind Chill Advisory is set to expire at noon on Friday, the National Weather Service warns the bitter cold could continue into Sunday morning.
The coldest wind chills are predicted to occur during the late night and early morning hours. Officials say frostbite on exposed skin in the bone-chilling conditions could happen in as little as 30 minutes.
The advisory is in place in Olmsted, Dodge, Mower, Fillmore, Houston, Winona, Wabasha and Goodhue Counties. Counties in southwestern Wisconsin and northeast Iowa are also included in the advisory.
The cold air is being pulled into the region by a winter storm that has prompted a Winter Weather Advisory in extreme southwest Minnesota and most of northern Iowa.
Officials say the best way to prevent harm from the arctic blast is to use caution while traveling outside, wear hats and gloves and to check on neighbors who may be in need of assistance.
