Two Iowa Teenagers Went for a Bike Ride and Ended Up Saving a Life
Sometimes being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference.
According to a report from KWQC, two teenagers from Fruitland, Iowa, are being praised after they discovered an elderly neighbor who had been trapped outside for more than 16 hours with no phone, no water, and no way to call for help.
How Did These Teens Find Her?
Best friends Gunner Skidmore and Kohen Chick decided to go for a bike ride on Tuesday morning. As they rode through the area, something caught their attention near a neighboring property.
The boys took a closer look and discovered an elderly woman lying in her yard. Realizing something was wrong, they stopped to check on her.
The woman immediately asked them to call 911.
How Long Had She Been Trapped Outside?
The woman told the boys she had been outside since approximately 5 p.m. the day before.
She reportedly didn't have her phone with her, had no water, and had no way to contact anyone for help. After spending the entire night outdoors, she was covered in bugs and shaken up.
The boys believe she may have fallen while feeding her horse. In an effort to get someone's attention, she reportedly rolled herself from the backyard to the front yard, where she hoped someone would see her.
What Happened After Help Arrived?
Unsure exactly what to do, the teens contacted Gunner's mother, who rushed to the scene and called emergency responders.
The woman was taken to a Muscatine hospital for treatment.
Gunner's family has even stepped in to help care for the woman's horse while she recovers.
It's hard not to think about what could have happened if those boys had decided to stay home that morning. Instead, a simple bike ride turned into a life-saving act of kindness.
