Scams are scary as is but they are even scarier when they involve banks, where all of our money is held!

There are so many scams going around at any given time, especially in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Scams have gotten so out of hand that the FBI even got involved recently, issuing a cybersecurity advisory to anyone with an email account.

Now, we have another scam to worry about right here in Minnesota - and not too far from the Duluth area.

Where Is This Scam Happening?

This scam was reported by United Community Bank, which has a handful of locations in Minnesota. This includes a location in Perham, which is just about three hours from Duluth.

That's pretty close to home, which means this scam or a similar scam could pop up in our neck of the woods. So how does it work?

How It Works

According to a warning put out by the bank's social media pages, customers in Minnesota have received calls from scammers posing as members of the bank's fraud department. These scammers then ask for their login information for their online banking account.

Obviously, you should never give out this information to anyone but if you get a call from a scammer like this, you might not think twice and give it out. You might even panic when you get the call thinking your account was compromised.

As always, never give out any of this information unless you are 100% certain that it is safe to do so. You can always hang up - and should - and call the bank directly to verify.

Sigh.
