Calling all fellow Harry Potter fans, did you know that Minnesota has a freaking major league quidditch team?! I didn't know about it until today and apparently, the Minneapolis Monarchs (that's their team name) will be playing the MLQ (Major League Quidditch) Championship tournament this weekend.

In case you aren't aware, I'm a big Harry Potter fan/nerd. So nerdy that my husband and I spent a day of our honeymoon at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And it was amazing! So I think it's so fun that we have a major league quidditch team.

What the Heck is Quidditch?

If you don't know what quidditch is, it's a popular game played by the characters in Harry Potter. They fly on brooms around the field and try to score points with things called quaffles. There are other items in the game like bludgers that can knock players off of their broom, and the snitch which a certain player (called the seeker) needs to catch to end the game, but I won't get any more into than that. If you know, you know and if you don't, you don't care to know any further info! That's the gist of quidditch.

So How Do You Play Quidditch in Real Life?

The real-life version of quidditch is described as "part-rugby, part-basketball, part-dodgeball" according to Bring Me the News. Based on watching quidditch in the Harry Potter movies, that combo makes sense for a real-life adaptation. However, they do still use "brooms" as props because quidditch without brooms is just lame.

The Benepe Cup

The championship tournament this weekend that the Minneapolis Monarchs will be playing in is the Benepe Cup in Maryland. Apparently, the Monarchs are really good, they won the North Division of the MLQ so maybe they'll bring home the championship too. If you're interested in watching the tournament, you can find the bracket HERE and a link to the live stream HERE.
