St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News)- Minnesota’s property tax collection could increase by nearly $950 million more in property taxes next year.

That’s according to the Minnesota Department of Revenue (MDR), which published its annual list of preliminary maximum property tax levies. 

The list is made up of preliminary maximum levies set by cities, counties, townships, school districts and special financing districts.

MDR: Minnesota Property Tax Collections Could Rise Over $13.8 Billion Next Year

In all, money collected by local governments through property taxes across Minnesota could increase by $948.2, a 6.9% increase from last year, when local governments collected $12.9 billion in property tax dollars.

MDR says the maximum levies set by cities would collect $4.022 billion in property taxes.

That would be an increase of 8.7% from last year if all cities approved the maximum tax hikes. 

Minnesota’s 87 counties would receive $4.543 billion in property taxes if all maximum increases are approved, an increase of 8.1% from 2025, according to MDR.

School districts levy collections next year would total $4.390 billion if all maximum increases are approved, a 5.8% hike from last year, according to MDR. 

Townships would see property tax revenues increase by $350 million while an additional $546 million would be collected in special financing districts. Those would be increases of 5.6% and 4.6% respectively if the maximum increases are approved, according to MDR.

Locally the Rochester City Council set the maximum property tax levy increase of 5.9% and the Olmsted County Board approved a 6.8% maximum property tax levy increase and a maximum 7.8% increase to the county’s Housing and Redevelopment Authority levy. 

Local governments have the ability to lower the increased property tax collections before passing budgets at the end of the year. MDR says the increased property tax collections last year were $63 million lower than the preliminary levies.
