St Paul (KROC AM News) -  A year ago Sunday, Minnesota had recorded its fifth COVID 19 death.

 

The death toll has since grown to more than 6800 as of Saturday. About two-thirds of the deaths have involved residents of long-term care or assisted living facilities.  The number of Covid deaths involving Minnesotans under the age of 50 remains very low. The current total is 151.

Cook County in northeast Minnesota is the only county that has not reported a Covid-related death.

Olmsted County reported its 94th Covid death Sunday, a person in their 90s. Olmsted County reported its first Covid death on April 2nd last year.

The state Health Dept. Sunday reported the number of positive Covid cases has grown to 515,000. The latest activity report shows more than 8.1-million tests have been conducted. The number of Minnesotans who have been tested had climbed to 3.7-million.

The latest report on Minnesota’s Covid vaccination activity shows nearly 1.6-million residents have had at least one dose and 976,000 are listed as fully vaccinated.

More than 80-percent of Minnesotans over the age of 65 have had at least one dose. That high number and a promise of more vaccine prompted Gov. Tim Walz to announce a huge expansion of the state’s vaccination program.
