Montgomery Family Asking for Help in Finding Cure for Son’s Illness
Every 30 minutes a child is born with a mitochondrial disease. It's much more common than you think but that doesn't make it any easier for Lukas Worm and his family in Montgomery.
"Lukas had his first seizure just before his third birthday," Lukas' mom, Nadine, said in a press release. After that, they went to many doctors appointments and through many tests to try and figure out what was going on. Eventually, Lukas was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease. Lukas is now 12.
The mitochondria are the power plants of the body and when you have a mitochondrial disease it causes the mitochondria to malfunction. If that happens, many things could occur including organs starting to fail, sickness, and sometimes death.
That's why the Worm family is encouraging everyone to take part in The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation's (UMDF) event called Energy for Life Walkathon. It's taking place on Saturday, August 18th at the Normandale Lake Bandshell (5901 W 84th St., Bloomington, MN 55438).
