Austin, MN (KROC-AM News) - Motorists traveling on I-90 in Austin will notice an overnight detour that starts Thursday, September 30th.

According to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, I-90 motorists in Austin will be detoured up and down the exit and on-ramps at 28th St. NE from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday, October 1st, while crews pour concrete for the new bridge deck.

If it is postponed because of weather, MnDOT expects the work to occur sometime later in the week or the week of October 4th.

A height restriction of 14.5 feet under the bridge remains in place when traffic is allowed under the bridge and will continue into October. Trucks exceeding the height limit must use the traffic ramps to avoid going under the bridge during this time.

Other detours will remain in place.

In May of 2021, MnDOT started the replacement of a bridge over I-90 in Austin at 28th St. NE. The bridge was nearing the end of its service life.

The reconstruction is part of a larger planning effort to update aging community infrastructure over the next decade along the I-90 corridor. In 2020, MnDOT split up its Austin bridge replacements project. Construction of the 28th St. NE bridge in 2021 is as planned. The Hwy 218/14th St. NW construction was deferred to 2022 to allow for additional design work.
