The sugar baby scam has come to Rochester, Minnesota. I was on Instagram the other day when I noticed I had a new pending message. I went in to check it out and low and behold, someone was asking me to be their sugar baby. I'm pretty sure I laughed out loud when I saw it but then, after talking about it on our morning show, I realized that this was a scam.

What's a Sugar Baby?

No, we aren't talking about the candy. A sugar baby is the younger person who receives an "allowance" from a sugar daddy or sugar momma. If you don't know what either of those are, they are a man or woman who is typically older who has a lot of money and is looking to pay someone to basically be arm candy and sometimes participate in sexual acts.

Here's the message I got from the guy:

My Experience with the Sugar Baby Scam

I was never going to respond to the guy or ever accept an offer to be someone's sugar baby, but this is one of those stories that I had to talk about on air. But while Dunken and I were talking about it, Dunken did some Googling and discovered that this is actually a scam that people have been victims of.

The Better Business Bureau says that in this scam, the scammer will send you a message over social media or a dating app asking you to be their sugar baby and they'll give you X amount in weekly allowance. If you accept the offer they'll start to send you money but then the scammer will ask you to send money "to their needy friend, pay an outstanding bill, or even make a donation to charity." As soon as you send the money, the scammers have access to your bank account and, boom, your money is gone.

So always be cautious about any message you receive that seems too good to be true!
