Personal Request – Can We Cut Kanye West Some Slack, Please?

Early this morning, Kanye West let fly with some powerful Tweets where he talked about his Kim Kardashian West, his wife, cheating on him and he he's been trying to divorce her, his net worth, something nasty about Kris Jenner, his mother-in-law, and how his family tried to 5150 him (have him committed over his objections). And with this hullabaloo, I ask, please...cut the guy some slack, OK?

I'm not going to link the Tweets, you can search for 'em if you really want. I just wanted to offer some background for what happened later this morning when Kim put out a statement. on her Instagram. To you and me, I think the most important part of the message is after the picture.

I read this and found myself nodding (my mental health journey is well documented on air and on this site). This part particularly hit home.

"We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with it in times when they need it the most...(to) the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this. Thank you for those who have expressed concern for Kanye's well being and for your understanding."

A lot of people don't like Kanye West and so make jokes and sneer at what's going on in his life right now. Knock it off. People with mental health issues have a hard enough time seeking help without being worried they'll be made fun of. Cut him some slack. Maybe even cut him the slack you'd give me (and that many have given me) when my mental health is at its worst.

The theme of offering love to those not only at their best times, but especially at their hardest times is one I will shout if needed. I guess I'd call that Shouty Love. But I think it is so true. I wrote about it after the George Floyd murder in RACIAL JUSTICE STARTS WHEN DEHUMANIZATION STOPS, so I'm not going to go over it all again.

Just remember, no matter how we feel about Kanye West, he's a human, and like all humans, I believe he deserves love and grace. Or at the very least, not being made fun of.
