In two weeks a 'pink' supermoon will be in our Southeast Minnesota sky! It'll technically be the second supermoon of 2021 (I'll explain that later) but this one is different because it's 'pink.' Sadly, that doesn't mean it'll actually be the color pink, though.

First, let's talk about why this supermoon is called a 'pink' supermoon. It's just because of the time of year the supermoon is coming about. The Old Farmer's Almanac says, "April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata", which is a pink color, hence the 'pink' moon.

Now we have to talk about when we'll be able to see this 'pink' supermoon! It'll happen Monday, April 26th. The Old Farmer's Almanac says that the best time to see it will be at about 11:33 PM Eastern Standard Time, so 10:33 PM here in Minnesota. That's because that's when it'll appear the biggest and brightest. That also means it'll be just on the horizon so you'll want to make sure you're in an open area to see the moon properly.

Finally, we need to talk about why this is technically the second supermoon of 2021. Just to make sure we're all on the same page, a supermoon is when the moon appears huge in the night sky and that's because it's during the "moon's closest approach to Earth in its orbit", according to Space.com. We all know that there are different moon phases and two of them are a full moon and a new moon. A full moon we can see, a new moon we can't see because the moon is between the Earth and the sun. But just because we can't see it doesn't stop the moon from being a supermoon. With all of that being said, there was technically a supermoon March, it was just a new moon so we couldn't see it.

This supermoon coming up in two weeks won't be the only one we will see this year! There will be another supermoon that we can see on May 26th and that will be the closest supermoon of 2021. The fourth supermoon, but one that we won't be able to see, will happen in June.

Did you know there's something called a moonbow? It's when the light of the moon makes a rainbow at night! That's so cool! Keep scrolling to learn more about moonbows and other interesting weather facts.
