Rochester-Area Woman Falls For ‘Car For Sale’ Scam
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A rural Rochester woman is out of some money in what authorities say was an unusual scam.
The woman reported the incident to the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office Monday.
She said she spotted a car for sale on Craigslist that caught her attention because it was a 2009 Toyota Corolla model that was being offered for $1,000. The seller said she needed to get rid of the car because her husband had died and she was being sent overseas on an Army deployment.
The woman agreed to give the seller the codes from e-Bay gift cards she was told to buy.
When the seller told the woman she needed to pay another $1,000 to cover insurance costs the victim became suspicious and tried to cancel the gift card codes but it was too late.
