Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester area could see its first significant snowstorm of the season this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for most of the southern third of Minnesota and the northern half of Iowa, along with a little bit of western Wisconsin. In Rochester, the advisory will be in effect from 2 PM Saturday through 6 PM on Sunday.

The latest forecasts predict the southeast corner of Minnesota will see 3 to 8 inches of snow, with the heaviest snow expected in areas south of I-90 into northern Iowa. The snow is expected to arrive in northern Iowa Saturday morning and push into southeastern Minnesota by the late afternoon.

The weather system bringing the snow to the region will also pull in a mass of arctic air next week. Forecasters are predicting southeastern Minnesota will experience its first sub-zero whether of the new winter season by Tuesday morning and the afternoon highs may only be in the single digits above zero.
