Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Police responded Friday night to a report of a burglary in progress and ended up arresting a man with an extensive history of domestic violence on felony assault and other charges.

A police spokesman says the incident was reported shortly after 9:30 PM at a residence in the 1100 block of 5th Avenue Northwest. The responding officers were told 32-year-old Phillip Berg had allegedly kicked down the front door and rushed into a back room where he confronted an ex-girlfriend who had an active “no contact” order against him. The police report says Berg allegedly grabbed the woman but was able to break free and fled from him.

There were two other people in the home and they attempted to restrain Berg until police arrived. He is accused of assaulting both men and the responding officers while they were placing him under arrest. Both officers suffered injuries and one was treated and released at St. Marys Hospital.

Police say Berg has a criminal history that includes a dozen domestic violence offenses with the past 10-years. He is now expected to face felony assault, domestic assault, burglary, and other charges.
