Rochester is known as Minnesota's Med City, but it could also be known as one of Minnesota's most Bicycle-Friendly cities again this year too.

It's all thanks to the yearly designation by the League of American Bicyclists, which has awarded Rochester its latest bronze Bicycle Friendly City award. According to a release from the city of Rochester, the award is a recognition of the strides (or pedals, maybe?) the city has made to improve "conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies."

It's a pretty big designation, too, because out of all the cities eligible for the award in the U.S., only 464 have made the list at one time or another. And, since the program began nearly 20 years ago, over 800 cities have applied. And this year, Rochester joins only 63 other cities in receiving the award.

It's not surprising, though, when you consider that Minnesota is the second-rated state in the nation by the League of American Bicyclists, with 25 bicycle-friendly cities, 69 bicycle-friendly businesses and 4 bicycle-friendly universities located here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Only Washington state rates higher than Minnesota, coming in first on the list this year. Meanwhile, over in my home state of Wisconsin, they're only rated #26 as a state when it comes to bicycle-friendliness. And our neighbors to the south down in Iowa come in at #30.
