Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  Your chances of getting caught speeding in Rochester will be higher between now and the end of the year.

The Rochester Police Dept. is planning to step up traffic enforcement with an emphasis on speeders.

RPD says between now and the end of the year, there will be an additional 112 hours of traffic enforcement that will be concentrated on Thursdays through Sundays. RPD received funds from the Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths campaign to pay for the extra enforcement.

Many Rochester motorists are still adjusting to the 25 mph limit on many city streets that took effect earlier this year.

RPD says although speed has been the largest contributor in deadly crashes on Minnesota roads during 2021 other factors become common this time of the year. These include weather conditions, holiday traffic, and increased alcohol consumption. RPD plans to have a dedicated DWI officer who will work extra shifts between Thanksgiving and the end of the year.

“We want our families and yours to be safe this holiday season, and that’s why RPD is making traffic enforcement a top priority. Drive smart by slowing down, paying attention, planning a sober ride and always buckling up,” shares Police Chief Jim Franklin.
