Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - An overnight  fire in northeast Rochester is being treated as a possible case of arson.

The fire at 1201 12th Ave NE a few blocks east of Jefferson School was reported at 1:15 a.m.

Crews arrived to find a detached garage fully engulfed and the flames were spreading to the house. The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes. The firefighters also had to deal with a downed power line that was arcing and sparking in the backyard.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Belau says the occupants escaped and some neighbors were briefly evacuated until the blaze was brought under control.

The preliminary damage estimate is $125,000. It includes fire damage to the siding of the home, total loss of the two car garage, fire damage to two cars and heat damage to the siding of a neighbor’s house.

A spokesman for the Rochester Police Dept says an investigator was called to the scene due to the suspicious nature of the fire.
