On Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety reported there had been 16 traffic fatalities reported to the agency since Saturday. It's unclear if this tragic incident and several other traffic deaths that occurred late Wednesday night and early Thursday were included in that total, which state officials highlighted while pleading with motorists to slow down and exercise more caution in their travels.

Since the start of this year, the number of traffic deaths in Minnesota is up more than 30-percent when compared to a year ago.
