Group Of Friends Dig Underground Tunnels + Speakeasy In Wisconsin
This is really cool, and something I'll definitely be following along. There is a group of volunteers who describe themselves as kids who never grew up, and they have quite the playground.
Sandland Created In 2011
The place is called 'Sandland.' It's a series of tunnels dug out of Jordan Sandstone in Northwestern Wisconsin. The tunnels are above the water table, so they stay relatively dry, and they expect the tunnels to last for thousands of years.
12 acres of land were purchased in 2011 in Wisconsin. The dream was to create an underground labyrinth of mazes and rooms to fascinate and confuse people for generations.
Who are the volunteers?
Sandland consists of people ranging in age from their 20s to their 60s. Many are students, scientists, and even public servants who never grew up and still want to build forts. I get it, that's pretty sweet.
How has it been dug?
Most of the excavating and digging has been done by using an electric chisel or by hand. They then shovel the sand into a cart wagon and pull it out of the tunnel.
Saveitforparts is a YouTube channel and he's a part of this group. He's created an underground speakeasy, and is continuing to expand it.
Other people are working on different parts of Sandland. There are mazes, hidden rooms, and even a slide is being built in the tunnel. Talk about fun!
Is it open to the public?
Sandland isn't a tourist attraction, but people interested in volunteering and helping can contact the organizers to get to know them and help out. Pretty cool stuff! Check out saveitforparts video!
