The good news is that our brutal snowy and cold February is almost over. The bad news is that March usually isn't much better!

It's hard to believe that the incredible amount of snow we have on the ground right now (about 28 inches) in southeast Minnesota was pretty much dumped in our laps by Old Man Winter in the only the last 3 or 4 weeks or so.

This month has been brutal so far, so if you're like me, you're pretty glad to see March on the horizon and will be happy to say goodbye to February. But here's the thing: In Minnesota, March is historically even snowier than February!

That's right. The old saying about March "coming in like a lion" is usually true. Even though it's pretty close, this Weather And Science Facts site says our average snowfall in Rochester in February is usually 8.5 inches (even though we've blown that average through the roof this year!).

But, in March, it's 8.7 inches!

Sure, we're talking averages here, and a two-tenths of an inch isn't that much. And given how much snow we got in February, it'll no doubt be tough to top this March. (Not that I'm challenging Old Man Winter, mind you...) But I'm guessing we can all remember some wet, heavy March snowstorms, right?

The good news is that once we get to Friday, Spring is less than three weeks away. And yes, I'm choosing not to remember last year's Spring snowstorm on April 16th, or that freak Spring snowstorm from 2013 that dumped 18 inches of snow on us... on May 2nd!
