Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester police are looking for a man suspected of holding a woman against her will at her apartment for a few days and beating her so badly she ended up in the hospital.

Police were notified around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday after the 32-year-old victim was able to send a text to a friend. Officers went to the woman’s apartment in the 4700 block of 14th Ave NW but the man had already fled through a window. He was spotted driving away and an officer gave chase. The pursuit was broken off when the man began driving at a high rate of speed.

He has been identified as 24-year-old Lawrence Chatman.

Captain John Sherwin says the two had an earlier relationship but the woman recently obtained a no contact order due to domestic abuse.

Sherwin says officers determined her injuries were so severe she was driven immediately to the ER at St Marys. Sherwin says her eyes were swollen shut and she had a large bruise in the jaw area. He says she also suffered some broken ribs and a possible fractured jaw. She was admitted and was still at St Marys Wednesday morning.

She told investigators she tried to get away from Chatman a few times on Sunday but was unsuccessful.
