Police say Monday that a 26-year-old man died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital early Monday after he was pulled from the water when he jumped over a downtown fence to get a cellphone he'd dropped into the water.

A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman tried to help, but fell in after him.

Rescuers pulled the men from the water, but spent hours looking for the woman. Police spokesman Amina Greer says a recovery mission is expected to begin sometime Monday morning.

Greer says the 23-year-old is in stable condition at St. Joseph Hospital.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the 26-year-old who died is from St. Paul, Minn.
