BCA: 13-Year-Old Girl in Stolen Van Killed During Law Enforcement Pursuit Near Grand Rapids, MN
The fatal incident occurred around 1:30 Sunday morning when an Itasca County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for driving without its headlights on Itasca County Rd. 63 west of Grand Rapids.
The BCA confirmed the vehicle refused to stop for the deputy after the squad car’s lights were activated. During the pursuit the van driven by the teen reached speeds as high as 90 mph, authorities say.
The State Patrol at one point deployed stop sticks but missed the van. The pursuit ended when the girl crashed the van into a tree near the intersection of Hwy. 6 and County Rd. 11.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators identified the van driver as 13-year-old Angelica Bryan of Cass Lake.
The BCA says investigators learned the van was stolen from a residence in Cohasset, which is just west of Grand Rapids, on the night of the fatal crash.
Investigators also determined that no law enforcement vehicles made physical contact with the stolen van during the pursuit. The deadly incident remains under investigation.
