The First Sign of Winter in Minnesota has Arrived (PHOTOS)
Right now, we are sitting on our decks and hanging out on the lakes in Minnesota but unfortunately, the first sign of winter has arrived.
Snowbirds, relax. Those first snow flurries aren't here yet. But, the supplies to help us battle our lovely Minnesota winters are on the way.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation shared a press release that stated semi tractor-trailers have been busy delivering road salt all over southeast Minnesota. Throughout our 11 county area, there are 23 truck stations where road salt is stored.
"Rochester’s truck station, 2,400 tons have been delivered. Trucks brought the salt from barges in Winona to the MnDOT facilities in southeastern Minnesota." - Minnesota Department of Transportation
The salt that has been delivered to Rochester is from mines in Michigan, Missouri or Kansas and was trucked in from barges in Winona. 2,400 tons have been delivered to our area so far and on average, MnDOT District 6 uses a total of 36,974 tons of road salt during our winter months.
The preparations don't stop with the delivery. Once the salt arrives, the lab gets busy and checks 1,500 to 2,000 salt samples for moisture, size, and impurities to check the quality.
