In what can be considered a first for a franchise that has won multiple WNBA championships, the Minnesota Lynx announced this morning in a press release that they would be retiring former Lynx, former Gopher player, now the head coach of the Women's Gopher Basketball team, Lindsay Whalen's #13.

The number retirement will be on June 8th when the Lynx host the Los Angeles Sparks. As someone who has attended a few Lynx games in the past, I am sure it will be a great atmosphere. Whalen, of course, wasn't just a dynamic player for the Lynx or the Gophers, she is one of us! Lindsay has had a lot of accolades come her way since she retired after last season. Last November Whalen attended the naming ceremony as Hutchinson High School named their gymnasium after the former Tiger.

“I want to thank Mr. Taylor, Coach Reeve and the entire Lynx organization for this outstanding honor. My time with the Lynx was nothing short of spectacular and to have my jersey retired, while being the first to do so means the world to me.” - Lindsay Whalen per Lynx Press Release

The Hutchinson, MN, native retired as the WNBA’s all-time wins leader, racking up 323 career victories, and added 54 more in the postseason, which ranks second all-time behind current Lynx player and former teammate Rebekkah Brunson (57).

The Minnesota Lynx will be playing in their 21st season this year. The Lynx will welcome the Chicago Sky to Target Center on Saturday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. to start the season. The 2019 campaign includes 34 regular-season games from May 25 through September 6.
