THIS SOUNDS LIKE A BAD IDEA

Have you ever craved a raw meat sandwich? What in the world is this? I've been alive for quite a while and never have I ever heard of this holiday tradition.

Apparently "Raw Meat Sandwiches" are a real thing. Our neighbors in Wisconsin apparently know this more than us. It is apparently pretty popular around the Milwaukee area.  This is a "Wisconsin Delicacy."  It is known as a few different things. "Tiger Meat" Sandwiches...."Cannibal Meat" Sandwiches.

According to an article I read on BringMeTheNews, State officials in Wisconsin is warning consumers that this is NOT a good idea; holiday tradition or not; eating raw meat has some dangers that come along with it.

THE DANGERS OF EATING RAW MEAT

Raw ground meat is susceptible to cross contamination because of the way it's processed; so it's a pretty bad idea to eat something that you're not going to heat and cook thoroughly. Salmonella and E-Coli can both be contracted from eating raw meat. Raw meat should always be cooked to 160 degrees.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO ANYWAY

There are a few tips if you are going to take a chance and eat raw meat.

  • Remember that proper handling and storage are important to avoid food poisoning from ground beef.
  • When you shop for your ground beef, pick it up last, so it is refrigerated longer, and then head home from the store right away.
  • Check the color and expiration date of the meat.
  • Keep raw meat separate from other food in your cart to avoid cross contamination.
  • Refrigerate within 2 hours of bringing your meat home from the store.
  • Keep meat on the lowest shelf in the fridge in a bag to keep juices from leaking out and contaminating other items in your fridge.
  • Refrigerate your leftovers and eat them within 2-4 days after fixing.
