It sure sounds like one of the 'Only In Minnesota' stories, doesn't it? But it's true-- a major ski race was just postponed... because of snow.

Seeing as we're smack-dab in the middle of another Polar Vortex-inspired cold snap, where being outside with exposed skin for a long period of time can be dangerous, we're used to seeing some typical cold-weather events canceled. (And not just from our ongoing pandemic.)

Which is why the headline of THIS ABC News story caught my attention: 'Open race at ski worlds postponed due to snowstorm.' It didn't say WHERE the race was, so, seeing as we've had our share of snow lately, I thought perhaps it was here in Minnesota.

As it turns out, though, the Alpine ski race that was canceled because they got too much snow actually happened over in Cortina D'Ampezzo, in northern Italy. That town is located in the middle of the Italian Alps, and when they say they got too much snow, they mean it: The story said over one meter of snow fell over the weekend, and more is still falling today. Converting that to our English measurements, that'd be over 3 feet of snow! Yeah, that's a lot of snow.

So much snow, in fact, that the story said the championships had to be postponed because race organizers couldn't get the snow grooming equipment out on the slopes to create a 'hard and reliable racing surface.' That kind of thing, though, is apparently, par for the course in that part of northern Italy, where they've already seen 15 FEET of snowfall in just a month!

I can totally see how THAT much snow can put a halt to things. But it's still hard not to giggle when you see the headline about a ski race being postponed-- because there's too much snow, right? Now, if you don't want to deal with that kind of snow, there are still a lot of ways you can get out and enjoy winter right here in Minnesota. Like spending a weekend in this... igloo. Seriously!
