What Is Minnesota’s Favorite Christmas Movie?
When it comes to favorite holiday movies, there are a lot of great choices out there, like It's A Wonderful Life, Elf, White Christmas and more. So just which one is Minnesota's favorite Christmas movie?
Well, that's the question the good folks over at House Method attempted to answer when they surveyed 4,500 people recently, using the Rotten Tomatoes’ List of Top 50 Christmas Movies. Then they ranked the results to find out just which holiday classic was the favorite movie in each of the 50 states.
And, here in the Land of 10,000 (Frozen) Lakes, our favorite Christmas movie is... A Christmas Story. Yes, that's right, the 1983 classic about Ralphie, who tries to convince his parents that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect Christmas gift, was number-one here in Minnesota.
I first saw A Christmas Story when I was in college at UW-Eau Claire, and the campus TV station ran it non-stop during finals week in December of my freshman year. According to House Method, 12.8 percent of Minnesotans voted for it as their favorite Christmas movie. Coming in a close second, at 11.2 percent, was Elf, followed by Home Alone, It's A Wonderful Life, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Over in my home state of Wisconsin, oddly enough, those results are just flipped-- House Method says Elf came in as the favorite Christmas movie in America's Dairyland, with A Christmas Story at number-two. But A Christmas Story was back on top down in Iowa as well as over in both North and South Dakota.
And if movies aren't your favorite holiday thing, you're not alone. House Method also found that some classic specials ranked high on the list of favorite Christmas movies. "4.1% of respondents chose 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' as their favorite Christmas movie. And if you like a little romance in films like 'Love Actually,' 2% of respondents are hopeless romantics as well," the survey noted.
