There were two things that really stood out to me when I moved to Rochester 13 years ago. One was the giant ear of corn. It was the first thing I noticed when I rolled into town and honestly I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I’ve since come to love it. The second thing that surprised me was the fact that people here didn’t sound like they do in the movie Fargo.

Don’t get me wrong we definitely have an accent but I don’t think it’s as bad as it's portrayed in movies and TV shows… at least not here in southern Minnesota.

Do you notice your Minnesota accent? I’ve caught myself saying boat with a strong accent and I drop you betchas all of the time but I don’t think I sound like a true Minnesotan.

I saw a quiz in the NY Times so I decided to see how Minnesotan my accent is.
The 25-question quiz has questions like: How would you address a group of two or more people? And, What do you call the insect that flies around in the summer and glows in the dark?

Despite what I thought my answers revealed that I fit right in here in Minnesota. You can take the quiz here to see if the way you talk matches where you live.
