Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester City Council was briefed Monday on an ongoing study into a proposal to use public buses to transport students.

Rochester Public Schools is behind the proposal because of its desire to have the same start time for all students. Supporters also say it would present an opportunity for students to become accustomed to public transportation so they become regular users as adults.

The council was told there are some issues that need to be resolved before a decision can be made on the feasibility of the proposal, including funding sources and a route study. It’s not known at this point if the plan would cost more than what the district currently pays for transportation. A better idea of costs will come when the district rebids its yellow bus contract at the end of the year.

The update of the study will be presented to the RPS Board Tuesday evening.
