Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A popular Rochester swimming beach has been temporarily closed because of high levels of bacteria.

The Rochester Parks and Recreation Department says regular testing of the water at Cascade Lake found elevated bacteria levels and that led to the decision to close the beach until test results show a return to an acceptable level of bacteria. The news release says the specific bacteria found at elevated levels was E. Coli.

Parks & Recreation Director Paul Widman shared, “We take seriously our role in ensuring our parks and recreation facilities are safe for our residents and visitors. As such, we have been taking the needed steps as the bacteria levels have been monitored. We will provide an updated communication to the community when levels return to a state where we can safely open the beach and lake.”

The news release on the beach closure notes that in shallow bodies of water, excessive rainfall, extreme heat, and wildlife can all result in increased bacteria levels. City officials say Foster Arend Beach remains open. Regular testing has found bacteria levels at that location are currently very low.
