Giant Silverware Is Popping Up All Over Minnesota!

Minnesota is more than just the home of the Twins and the Vikings.  Beyond sports, a few popular items also got their start in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, including masking tape and rollerblades.

Way back in 1937, the small town of Austin, Minnesota, became the birthplace of SPAM at Hormel Foods. When World War II hit, feeding our troops became a huge priority.  A large percentage of its SPAM products went to help feed the armed forces in the U.S. government.

Today, the Hormel plant in Austin covers 1.3 million square feet.  SPAM is still created there and is one of the 1 billion pounds of food produced at that site annually.  There is even a fun SPAM museum in Austin where you can learn all about the history of this organization and even sample some SPAM.  I've tried it when I went on the tour...I'd personally rather have a sample of bacon.

Years ago, if you drove near the headquarters of Hormel and the plant, there really wasn't anything other than a sign to show who the company was.  Hormel Foods decided that needed to change.

Is That A Giant Fork Standing Tall in Austin, Minnesota?

An idea sprung up among the team that they really should have something food-themed displayed on the property.  After all, Hormel is a food-themed company.

After a visit with Artist Gordon Huether, the vision was created to design a 25-foot-tall fork.  It wasn't just one fork though; this giant piece of silverware is made of 20,000 individual forks.

This piece of art really represents the "power of food" and that everyone on the Hormel team plays an important part in feeding the world.  To incorporate that piece of Hormel into the art, the almost 20,000 Hormel employees were asked to donate a fork to help create this massive giant fork.  (Check out the video below to see how this fork was made - it's really impressive!)
