When I was a kid, we didn't go out to eat very often. Life in the 70s and 80s was VERY different from today. I'm pretty sure I would have never ever seen inside a Pizza Hut if it wasn't for the Book It program.

The restaurant memories that I do have are mostly because the restaurant provided a fun experience for us - the kids. One of those spots I'll never forget was a place called Happy Chef.

The reason why Happy Chef was "The Best" in a kid's eyes is because of a little button on a giant statue.

Why Did Kids Love Eating at Happy Chef?

Besides the homemade cinnamon rolls and classic breakfast foods that kids love, there is one giant reason why kids love the Happy Chef restaurant - the Happy Chef statue.

I remember rushing to the giant 20 ft. Happy Chef statue in front of the building because I knew how to make it talk to us. There was a button that we could push and then magically, he would speak! Back then, when we didn't have computers or cell phones, THIS was one of the coolest things to experience.

In a time when there are 451 Subway locations, 209 Dairy Queens, and 296 Caribou Coffee shops in Minnesota, it is sad to think that the iconic Happy Chef just has a single place left. But, if you want to show your kids a bit of history and hear the talking Happy Chef statue, you are in luck because one statue remains!
