Former Hawkeye Pitcher Donating $20 Per Strikeout to Stead Family Children’s Hospital
Every strikeout Drew Irvine records this season is making a difference for children and families in Iowa.
The former University of Iowa pitcher, now a member of the Indianapolis Clowns in the Banana Ball League, is donating $20 for every strikeout he records to UI Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital.
Irvine said the inspiration comes from his time as a Hawkeye, when he took part in the Hawkeye Wave and visited patients at the children's hospital.
"Every time we did the Wave, it was hard to not be touched by it, to get chills," Irvine said. "Any chance to go see the kids was absolutely amazing."
From Iowa Dreams to Banana Ball
A West Des Moines native and Waukee High School graduate, Irvine grew up dreaming of wearing the black and gold. He played three seasons for the Hawkeyes before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, spending two and a half years in the organization's minor league system.
After his release, Irvine continued playing in the Australian Baseball League before suffering a fractured elbow. Unsure what came next, he took his mother's advice and tried out for Banana Ball.
"It's amazing," Irvine said. "I went from thinking I was done to now getting to play in sold-out stadiums."
More Than Entertainment
Known for its fast-paced games, choreographed dances and fan interaction, Banana Ball is as entertaining as it is competitive. Irvine admits dancing isn't his strongest skill, joking that he's "much better at juggling."
Despite the fun atmosphere, he says the competition is genuine.
"The only thing that's scripted is the dancing!" Irvine said. "We're playing to win out there."
As he continues his Banana Ball season, Irvine hopes every strikeout can make an impact beyond the baseball field. His donations will help support the patients and families at Stead Family Children's Hospital, turning each punchout into another way to give back to a place that has meant so much to him.
