This weekend at the Como Park Conservatory up in St. Paul, Minnesota there is going to be a really cool Japanese festival that you can experience yourself. The festival is called the Obon holiday which is a big holiday celebrated over four days in Japan.

While the festival has already ended in Japan (it was celebrated Saturday, August 13th through Tuesday, August 16th this year), it's being celebrated at the Como Park Conservatory on Sunday, August 21st.

What is the Obon Holiday in Japan?

The Obon holiday, also just called the Bon festival, is a celebration of one's ancestors. Japan Rail Pass says, "It is believed that their spirits return at this time to visit their relatives."

Obon Holiday Festival at Como Park Conservatory

The Como Zoo and Conservatory website says that their family-friendly festival this weekend will be "reminiscent of Japan’s annual Obon holiday". It will also include other aspects of Japanese culture like "martial arts, singing, dancing, drumming, [and] delicious food".

Tickets are advance purchase only, so make sure to grab yours online before heading up to the cities. The price for tickets is $5 for adults, (13+), $3 for kids (3-12) and seniors (65+), and kids 3 and under are free.

The event will take place on the grounds of the Como Park Conservatory so not only could you check out this cool Japanese festival but also the conservatory and the zoo! It could be a whole day trip for the family.
