Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A former St. Louis Missouri man has been sentenced to five years on probation for stealing thousands of dollars from his father after the older man moved into a local assisted-living facility.

36-year-old David Graves, who now has a Coon Rapids address, was also ordered to pay nearly $59,000 in restitution during his sentencing hearing in Olmsted County court Wednesday afternoon. He earlier pleaded guilty to a felony theft charge in the case.

The criminal complaint against Graves says he was put in charge of his father’s bank account in order to pay his father’s bills and records show he began withdrawing funds in 2012. By the time authorities were contacted, the total had grown to $86,000 through the end of last year. He is accused of using $59,000 for his personal use.

His father told investigators he agreed to help pay his son’s bills after he lost his job but did not give him permission to take all his money. Graves told investigators he used the money to buy drugs, mainly methamphetamine.
