This Is Why Rochester’s Plummer Building Is Lit Up in Blue

If you happened to get into work in downtown Rochester before the sun came up Monday morning, you might have noticed the iconic Mayo Clinic Plummer Building lit up in blue. What's up with that?

As it turns out, one of Rochester's most historic buildings is joining other landmarks across Minnesota (and other states in the upper Midwest) in going blue in honor of Colorectal Awareness Month.

According to this KARE-11 story, Governor Mark Dayton officially declared March Colorectal Awareness Month here in Minnesota. And, 62 different buildings and landmarks across the Land of 10,000 Lakes (including Rochester's own Plummer Building) will be lit up to show support for colorectal cancer patients as well as raising awareness of the importance of screening.

The story goes on to note just how pervasive colon cancer really is. "Experts say 1 in 20 Americans will be diagnosed with colon cancer in their lifetime. It's the nation’s No. 2 cancer killer in the United States. Doctors say screening for colon cancer should start at age 50 for those with average risk, sooner for people with a family history of the disease," the story said.

The story said the buildings will be lit up in blue from dusk to dawn today, so if you missed it this morning, you might be able to check it out later tonight.
