With Halloween just a few days away, I know there are some Minnesota moms scrambling to get all of the candy to pass out to trick-or-treaters.  Obviously, we pick out the kind of candy we love the most because of the "mom tax". But I know a few moms that are still needing to find just the right costume for everyone in the house.  But how old is too old and is there a maximum age for trick-or-treating in Minnesota?

What is the maximum age for a child to go trick-or-treating on Halloween in Minnesota?

A few years ago, news broke about a town in the U.S. that was actually making it against the law for kids over the age of 12 to go door-to-door on Halloween night.  The state of Virginia is super strict when it comes to these rules and according to yahoo.com, the following towns in that state will actually fine or threaten jail time: Chesapeake, Norfold, Portsmith, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

Virginia isn't the only state that had cracked down at one point on older trick-or-treaters.  New Jersey has an area where they actually made a rule over 30 years ago where kids could only trick-or-treat if they were 12 or younger.  The same yahoo.com story also mentioned that Belleville, Illinois did the same thing but in both Illinois and New Jersey, there was rarely any followthrough on those rules.

Now, what about Minnesota?

I did a ton of research today to try to find any town or area in Minnesota that had a specific age limit in place for trick-or-treating on Halloween and I have to say, I couldn't find anything about a maximum age.

The only thing close to a "rule" that I found is a curfew for teenagers in Rochester.  This doesn't just apply for Halloween night though - it is a normal thing.  (And fyi, I had no idea this was even a thing until my daughter was about 17 years old...so, oops.)

If there is law somewhere that I couldn't find, let me know at jessica.williams@townsquaremedia.com.

Should kids over 12 years old go trick-or-treating or not?

If a kid over 12 comes to my door, they can have candy.  I don't care.  As long as everyone is kind, has some manners, and makes sure to watch out for the little kids, the night will be fun for everyone.  Now, if you don't want older kids to come to your door, turn your light off, otherwise, there are probably going to be kids over 12 showing up.

Do you remember when you went trick-or-treating for the last time?  I'm guessing I was about 12 or 13 years old but I'll be honest, I was wearing one of those super flammable costumes from the 80's so I'm sure I had lead poisoning happening while I was out begging for candy and it has impaired my memory.  Let me know over on my Facebook page - Jessica On The Radio - the age you remember.
