Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester police arrested a man early Friday after finding him in the apartment of a woman who was beaten so badly she had to be taken to St Marys Hospital.

Police Capt John Sherwin says officers were actually called to the apartment by Gold Cross paramedics who had responded to a medical alert. Sherwin says 55-year-old Joseph Colon had followed the woman home and forced his way into her apartment where he assaulted her.

Sherwin says officers had been called to the apartment before the assault  was reported by a resident who saw Colon in the building. The resident was aware police had been looking for Colon earlier in the day on another matter. The officers went to the woman’s apartment and although they heard noises, no one answered the door so they left. A short while later, the woman was able to lock herself in a bathroom where she activated the medical alert.

Sherwin says it’s suspected the woman suffered fractured facial bones and other injuries. Colon is expected to face several charges.

Sherwin says the two know each other through a prior relationship.
