After 3 Decades, Rochester’s Favorite Dance Teacher is Saying Goodbye to the Studio
After 3 decades of teaching dance in Rochester to thousands of students, one of the best instructors in Rochester is retiring. Janet M. Johnson shared the news with her students and families at Allegro School of Dance and Music recently that she will be retiring in June.
I remember wearing a tutu at Allegro!
Quite a few people on social media have been reminiscing about their days in tutus and wearing ballet slippers during their days of dance at Allegro. Thousands of students have walked through the doors there and received excellent instruction from Janet and many have even gone on to have professional careers in the arts.
According to the press release that was sent out, Janet M. Johnson established the Allegro School of Dance in 1989 in Rochester after she acquired her B.F.A. in dance performance, with an emphasis in ballet from the College of St. Teresa in Winona. In 1999, she acquired the Rochester Ballet School. The two organizations were merged and as more space was needed, the current facility was built with four state-of-the-art dance studios and spaces for private music instruction in 2003 on Superior Drive NW.
Janet's passion for the arts wasn't felt just in the studio. She was also one of the fifteen founding members of the More Than Just Great Dancing (MTJGD) organization, receiving the MTJGD Positive Action Award in 2018. You can read more about her achievements and her plans for retirement here.
