Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) - Olmsted County deputies may be using body cameras early next year.

The Olmsted County Board Wednesday approved a request from Sheriff Kevin Torgerson to pay for and implement the program. Torgerson says the program is expected to cost the county about $300,000.

Torgerson says all his deputies will use the cameras, including those who work in the county jail.

Before the program begins, the county needs to adopt a policy dealing with camera use and data collection and storage. Torgerson says public input on his department’s proposed body camera policy will be accepted through Nov 15.

Torgerson expects the County Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed policy at its Dec 13 meeting. If the policy is approved, it’s expected the camera program will begin during the first quarter of next year.
