National Retailer Shutting Down 96 Stores

2025 is not turning out the way most of us expected. Our landscape of businesses is changing and several have already announced the heartbreaking news that they are closing in Minnesota. All of the Joann Fabrics stores are closing, a Hobby Lobby store has had its final sale. Kohl's and Macy's have also picked stores in the North Star state to close for good.

Sadly, we just heard that another company is closing nearly 100 stores throughout the United States and I found out that one of the locations on the list includes a store in Minnesota.

Another National Retailer Just Announced It Is Closing Nearly 100 Stores in the United States

Recently in USA Today, it was reported that during a fourth-quarter earning report, Dollar General informed the public that 96 Dollar General stores would be closing in the first quarter of 2025. Another 45 Popshelf stores throughout the country would also have their final sales and shutter for good.

Since that fourth-quarter report announcement was made, the question in many communities has been, "Will it be our store?". Today, we have confirmation of one location in Minnesota that is in its final days.

One Of The 96 Dollar General Stores Closing Is This One In Minnesota

The Dollar General company operates in 48 states and has over 20,000 stores that include Dollar General, DG Market, DGX, and pOpshelf.

Minnesota may not be familiar with the newer pOpshelf store but we do have quite a few Dollar General stores in the state. Based on numbers provided by Poidata, Minnesota currently has 388 Dollar General stores.

According to WJON, it has been confirmed that one of the Dollar General stores closing is in Minnesota. A "store closing" banner outside and shelves that appear fairly empty is the reality for the Dollar General store at 704 North Willow Street in Royalton, Minnesota.

What is a pOpshelf Store?

pOpshelf is one of the newer store concepts by Dollar General that came to life in 2020. To put it plainly, it is for shoppers that are a little bit wealthier but still love a great bargain. CNBC said in 2021 that the original plan was to open 1,000 pOpshelf stores by the end of 2025, but now we are hearing that 45 are on the list to close instead.
